Book Review – Born to Run (Written by Michael Morpurgo)

Born To Run Blog Post

Hello Fellow Readers,

Today I have for you a book review. This time by a different author. When I was in Secondary school, we studied one of his books, and I thought maybe I’d still like his writing style, now I’m a bit older.

Title Born to Run

Author Michael Morpurgo

Main characters

Patrick (Best Mate)

Becky (Bright eyes)

Joe (Paddywack)

Other characters

Mr Bossy Boots

Mrs Brightwell

Craig (Becky’s Mother’s Boyfriend)

Marion (Joe’s wife)

Lynn (Careworker)

Mrs Bellamy (Matron)

Miss Carter (Resident in Nursing home)

Bob Larkin (Resident in Nursing Home)

Synopsis

‘There was something inside the bag, squeaking and squealing in terror. Patrick didn’t think about it. He leaped into the canal.’

For Best Mate, being rescued is only the start of his adventures. From unwanted burden to favourite companion and from pet to champion race dog, this remarkable greyhound proves that is not just cats who have more than one life. Cast aside, kidnapped, or living rough in the streets, Best Mate can always find a way to survive. But will he ever find a real home?

My thoughts

Characters – I found the main characters to be very vulnerable people. They weren’t happy until they had a dog.

Patrick was an only child and to be an only child, it must be pretty lonely. So having a dog makes up for this.

Becky, is a teenager who is suffering in silence as her mother has a new boyfriend who she doesn’t approve of.

Joe is a widow who was in luck to have Bright eyes become his new companion, and is named Paddywack, as it was Joe’s late wife’s favourite rhyme.

Storyline

Very touching but it makes you realise how a lot of things change in such a short space of time. Time passes, and people change and move on.

Conclusion

It was a very lovely read, although I have to admit I have grown out of his writing. Putting this aside, I would recommend this to a student in secondary, high school.

Thank you so much for reading.
